As I sit here and continue to read about the numerous executive orders the current president of the US is instating I feel incredibly frustrated. The current administration is trying to dismantle many of the programs and aspects that the majority of Americans use and/or need. Furthermore, the very things this administration is trying to destroy are the things that “Make America Great.” How can someone claim to be doing things to benefit a nation when all they are doing is widening the gap between the rich and poor, throwing hardworking Americans off of their health insurance and banning hard working individuals from coming or returning to America because they come from a Muslim background.
When it comes to the Muslim ban and the building of this stupid wall these are prosecutorial actions by a shady administration. We hear it time and time again. The foundation of the US was built on immigrants. For the purpose of making a point I will overlook the fact that we are living on stolen land from natives, who by the way this administration is also targeting by reversing President Obama’s order to stop the building of the Dakota access pipeline. But returning to immigration, written on the Statue of Liberty “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door” how is enacting a Muslim ban and building a wall live up to this statement? It doesn’t. This tactic is hateful, racist and unAmerican.
America has an abundance of wealth; many would say too much wealth for its own good. There is no reason for us to not share that with others. Furthermore, this ban is not only effecting refugees but American citizens with Muslim backgrounds, legal visa holders who are being forbade from returning to the states, international students coming from these 7 countries. There are so many things wrong with the executive orders that the President is putting through currently, but this one in particular counteracts the beauty that makes up this country and that’s diversity. Too many people fought for too long trying to earn rights and equity for themselves and for others. If these orders are enacted they will be setting the US back 50+ years of progress.
I am currently attending a political university in France. While in class we tend to discuss the US, because of the vast role it plays in international relations. In many of my courses we look at how the US manipulates and mistreats it neighbors & other countries and what the effects are of that. The US holds an enormous amount of power; mishandling and misusing that power does not help it in any way. Trying to isolate the US from the outside world will not be beneficial and will likely be detrimental for the country as a whole.
I wish I could be in the US protesting alongside my fellow Americans and standing up for all the groups being targeted, Muslims, Latinx, women, and pretty much any other minority, but for now I will have to protest from across the Atlantic. But I stand with these groups. Greatness and change is achieved when we work together and I am proud to see so many people getting out there and enacting their first amendment rights and standing up for what is right. Perseverance and cooperation will hopefully get us through these dark and baffling times. #NoBanNoWall
